About Balfolk

This workshop focuses on ensemble playing for all instruments. Besides hurdy-gurdy and bagpipes, other instruments that can play together with these are also welcome, e.g. diatonic accordion, chromatic accordion, guitar, winds, bass, percussion or other instruments! Please indicate your instrument and tuning clearly when registering. Expect something along the lines of Anouk Sanczuk’s work with Bamako Express, Broes, Duo De Schepper-Sanczuk, or Duo Gambetta-Sanczuk.

Anouk: “We learn to play a melody and discover how we can experiment with it. We create arrangements, come up with a second part and an accompaniment, and give the music its own character. We learn about harmony, then let ourselves go for a bit through improvisation. Listening, creating and working together are at the heart of what we do. Let your creative spirit run free and experience the joy of making music together!”

Level of playing

Participants are from intermediate to advanced level. They have basic mastery of regular three- and four-beat & are already familiar with playing typical folk melodies. They have far surpassed the beginner level, have previously followed workshops/courses or have been playing motivated and intensively for at least two years. If in doubt, the level can be discussed.
In comparison with our Saturday course: this workshop is intended for approximately the same level as the intermediate to advanced courses of the past year. Consult with your teacher if necessary.

On the subject of learning music, Anouk says: “There won’t be any sheet music to start with, as I like to begin learning music by ear; only if I see that it’s not working out will I provide sheet music.“

About Anouk Sanczuk

Anouk Sanczuk has been playing the violin since the age of four and quickly developed an interest in folk music. She founded the folk group Falafel, with which she won the Balrally in 2007, an event organized by vzw Boombal and vzw Muziekmozaïek. In October 2009, the new formation Broes was born. With Broes, she was named Best Newcomer of the Year (Folkroddels) in 2010, won the Dranouter Rootsrally in 2013, and received the Flanders Folk Award for Best Live Band in 2023. She also studied jazz violin at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles and the ArteZ conservatory in Arnhem.

In recent years, she has played in various projects such as the Ghent Folk Violin Project, Broes, Bamako Express, Motyk, Duo De Schepper-Sanczuk, Duo Gambetta-Sanczuk, and has participated in the Room13Orchestra. She has also delved further into the world of theatre through collaborations with Compagnie Krak in the projects BankContact Invasion and Els Degryse’s cabaret show “The Woman Who Sells Her Clitoris.”
