Hurdy-gurdy advanced to more advanced – Grégory Jolivet (Fr)

This workshop is especially for advanced to more advanced players who want to dive deeper into the approach & playing style of this wonderfull player:

Grégory wrote:
“Join us for a unique workshop exploring the nuances of the hurdy-gurdy
through a suite of two-time bourrées from Berry and through one or two country dances from John Playford’s repertoire (17th century).
Workshop Highlights:
• Variations and ornamentation: refine and personalize your interpretation.
• Rhythmic mastery: learn to synchronize or dissociate the buzzing bridge (“chien”) with
dance rhythms.

Level of playing

This workshop is intended for (very) advanced players. Participants have several years of playing experience, they have followed several advanced courses. Learning a melody or dissociating the stroke hand and the melody hand is not a problem. Participants fully master cranking the gurdy up to the four-beat and can also apply them irregularly.
In comparison with our Saturday course: this level is not taught in Zeist.
The workshop is given in English.
Grégory indicates that melodies are learned by ear.

Maximum amount of participants: 12

Grégory Jolivet

Grégory Jolivet began playing the hurdy-gurdy in 1991 at the Bourges National School of Music (ENMB) under the guidance of Laurent Bitaud. After earning prestigious awards (Saint-Chartier 1996, Gannat 1997), he obtained his Diploma in Musical Studies (DEM) in 1998 and a State Diploma (DE) as a hurdy-gurdy teacher in 2004.

A professional musician since 2001, Grégory continually pushes the boundaries of hurdy-gurdy music. Equipped with alto and soprano hurdy-gurdies crafted by renowned luthiers (Mousnier, Kerboeuf), he performs both solo and with numerous ensembles, such as La Machine, Blowzabella, Rue Pascale, Le Grand Barouf, and more. His compositions blend tradition with modernity, incorporating innovative electro techniques.
Discography:
Grégory has contributed to over 20 albums and released his first solo CD, Alt’o Solo, in 2008—a vibrant mix of acoustic and electro sounds, enriched by innovative techniques such as tapping, effects pedals, loopers, and beatboxing.
