The Courses

Courses for all type of instruments

Ensemble: "accompaniment and harmony" - Zabou Guérin (Fr)

"Let's go into accompaniment and harmony. In this workshop, we will see how accompany a simple melody, adapted to its instrument and level. We will play with structures, rhythm and harmony."
About Zabou: "Cradled to the sound of the accordion in her mother's womb, zabou has always played. As a soloist or in bands, classical, tango, song accompaniment, traditional music from different countries, swing waltzes ... She plays what she likes. She arranges, she transforms, she creates and when she has a little spare time, she teaches. Among other things, you can hear her with « Madragoa » (Portuguese music), « Pince mi Pince toi » (Musical juggling show), « Si la musique s’arrête ?» (Clown show) and of course The Duo Michaud/Guérin (traditional dance music)"

Ensemble: Alchemy of Sounds - Merit Zloch (De)

Lets refine tradtional melodies and transform them into groovy dance music, into airs that speak to the heart, into associative sound structures - and many more.Together we will explore how to bring excitement into musical arrangements - using simple but effectiv tricks. On the basis of melodies taken from German dance music manuscripts (which we will "milk" - as a former participant put it)- we will keep the musicalchemistic kettle boiling.
You are welcome - no matter if you are looking for new arrangement ideas for your band or if you are want to try how it feels to play with other musicians for the first time.
This workshop will not be based on sheet music. Please bring - besides your instrument(s) - something to write and some recording device.

About Merit Zloch
Harpist, composer and music teacher Merit Zloch sees herself in the tradition of the itinerant harp players of the 19th and early 20th century. She travels - just as they did - with her harp through Europe and wants to charm people with her music – original compositions as well as arrangements of historical dance music.
Merit Zloch plays in bands almost as long as she plays harp and is constantly fascinated by the interplay between musicians. She likes to arrange und develop pieces together with her band colleagues and to improvise. Furthermore she researches on historical dance manuscripts and organises musicians meetings, bals and instrumental workshop weekends.

Bagpipe Courses

These bagpipe courses are about the French, Flemish or Low Lands pipes (tuned in g).

(More) Advanced bagpipes - Matthias Branschke (De)

Matthias Branschke plays bagpipes with half closed fingering for 20 years. His groovy play is delicat and full of expression.
He´s currently playing with "T.K.P." (Duo with the violinist Vivien Zeller), "sunday jam" (Trio with Vivien Zeller and harpist Merit Zloch), and "Duo Branschke/Armstrong" (together with pipes Callum Armstrong). Searching for the "perfect bagpipe" Matthias Branschke decided to become an instrument maker. Since 2010 - besides his musical activities - he runs his own bagpipe making workshop in Berlin (dudelsackmanufaktur.de).
Matthias wrote about this workshop:"Playing a tune once is nice, playing it twice works well, but in the third round some variation is needed. In a band setup you can solve this problem with arranging it together with the colleagues, but solo or in a session it might be nice to fill in the gaps with some nice ornaments.
In this workshop we will concentrate an ornamentations and fillings in tunes. What are common tricks for scales and triads? What kind of chromatic side notes can be used and how much space that can be filled up with ornaments is actually in a melody? The basic melodies will be a mixture between traditional German repertoire, new composed tunes and probably a few session standards.
I will teach all tunes by ear, sheet music is available in case. It might be useful to bring a recording device."
